Ok my Driv3r review. Its in General because its on PS2 XBOX and soon PC (but ive got it on XBOX)

Graphics : Are very good when your still, when you move you get poor popup and offten lag and i mean lag. Also The characters have very bad animations and the inside parts are very plain.
    7/10

Sound : Atmospheric music with a good range of effects and the video's are even better thanks to the voice overs by Michael Madsen, Ving Rhames and Iggy Pop.
    9/10

Gameplay : Driving the cars is pure joy because of the Physics engine even if its a bit silly sometimes. The bikes are just as fun but the trucks feel way too light. The boats are a bit boring so take it or leave it. The shooting parts are a bit better than Vice city's but hasent got the range of wepons vice has. Also the whole game is letdown a bit from quite a few glitches e.g AI cars driving trough walls. Director mode still hold's its own
    8/10

Lifespan : There are only about 25 missions and there not long and the driving games arnt much fun, but you do get fee roaming along with 3 citys each one a bit smaller than vice which will make the game last.
    7/10

Verdict : This game is a top quality release but fails to be elite so you cant help feeling disappointed. If you have a good PC i would wait untill the PC version and hope they iron out the glitches. If they dont its still well worth your time and money.
    8/10

    Better than GTA 3
Not as good as GTA Vice City

Might as well post me own. I love the game, tbh - I can't see what so many people dislike about it. If I had to say it; I'd say that this is better than any GTa game (despite 2's awesomeness).

I think a lot of people's problems is that they've got the Xbox version - the port: the PS2 version has been in development for quite a while, and the whole way that it's programmed is entirely different to the Xbox version. The PS2 can also support better AI (something to do with its processor).

    This is no GTa

Perhaps I should reiterate that - This is no Grand Theft auto: sure, you can steal cars and shoot people, but that's where the similarities end. This is Driv3r: the highly anticipated sequel to Driver and Driver 2.

I'll start at the easiest point - the graphics. The graphics are, to be honest, rather stunning. Not exactly MetalGear Solid 2 or Gran Turismo 3, but excellent nonetheless: smooth models, good frame-rates and such makes for quite a nice looking title. The sound is fairly good - the game features some good music (although not enough), and the sounds of the cars are spot on.

Let's move on to te more important bits. The handling of the cars is fantastic; much better than the previous Driver games. Although it takes a bit of getting used to, you'll love it. Yet this is not where the excellence ends - the damage models are superb - drive at high speed into a wall and the car will suffer, just as you'd expect: on one occasion I managed to make my car lean on one side. Like when the tyres are shot out - the handling may suffer.
The part of the game which I was most worried about was the on-foot. I heard many complain of bad controls, difficult aiming...but I was incredibly shocked at what I found. The controls were really rather good: dual analog controls ( common in first person, or third person shooters), using R1 to fire and the mapping of the rest of the buttons was not perfect, but was near enough. As to actually controlling it, I found it rather easy to get used to - my aiming wasn't perfect at first, but it wasn't when I played SOCOM or Hitman 2 for the first time (comparable on foot controls...well, similar - analog sticks and R1). There is a large variety of weapons, and the effects are rather good (most notably using a grenade launcher on a vehicle - watching it lift into the air, and parts of it sent flying).

The menu screen is fairly simple, but effective - some cool music runs in the background, and some short samples of FMVs from the game behind the text (the text being the selectable options, slightly to te left of the centre).
The main body of the game is the undercover mode - the story mode: you play as undercover cop Tanner, trying to unravel a case of about 40 cars being stolen and transported from the inside. The story isn't fantastic, yet at the same time is not terrible, but the FMVs are fantastic. If you've played Driver 2; you'll remember how amazing the FMVs seemed at the time - Driv3r's are astonishing. The actual Undercover mode is quite good - there is a fair challenge, although not to the extent of Driver 2: if I'm honest, I'd say that it isn't hard enough. As for the length - it's adequate, but the Undercover mode isn't what will keep you playing.
What will keep you playing is the other modes - the driving games from the previous titles return (Quick chase, quick getaway, survival and others) and are, to say the least, fantastic. Yet what is keeping me playing is not just this, but Take A Ride: you select a city, select a car, time of day, weather, start point and other options, and are set out into Miami, Nice or Istanbul to do as you wish - wreak havoc or explore sensibly: it's entirely your choice. Take A Ride is packed with hours of entertainment - fantastic car chases (or other vehicles, naturally), hidden vehicles (Miami features a Go-Kart and a car based on the GT40) and many other delights. When you're done, there's Film Director - view your replay, edit the camera angles, slow-motion (similar to the fun but gimmicky Thrill Cam when you're actually driving), motion blur and a number of other options, and then you can save it to your memory card (a replay only takes up about 90kb!).

Yet, of course, Driv3r isn't all good - like all things, it features some bad points. My problems with it are relatively minor, however. Driver 2 featured some good multiplayer modes, composed of the driving games and Take A Ride. I was hoping that Driv3r would see the return of these and with them, a Network Play option. Sadly not. Although I am disappointed at such a thing being excluded, it does not drop the score significantly. Perhaps it well be featured in the next Driver game.

Overall score? 9/10. Just the exclusion of multiplayer wasn't enough to drop it a mark, but there was a small something missing which I haven't put my finger on yet. An excellent game - well worth a purchase. Unless, of course, you're expecting Grand Theft auto, which this is not.

10/10 for that review Nirvana, thought it was straight to the point and well noted.

It may not be any GTA but at the end of the day, its always gonna be compared to that series. I mean i havent heard any mention of "The Getaway", Driv3r from what you have both said seems more like that than GTA.

Then again, I havnt played it yet, im waiting for the PC version, not only because of what Nirvana said, but also since its easier access for me basically
(family always want to watch tv hence playing on the ps2 is difficult)

No its the same game. If anything the XBOX version would have better graphics.

Yes but stealing cars and shooting people takes up 95% of the game play in gta and Driver so they are very similer games.

    ;)

I think the driving sections are fab, a real adrenaline rush, but it all goes downhill during the on foot sections (in a very stiff, annoying, fiddly way).

Driv3r was a MASSIVE letdown, admittedly I had massive expectations so it was OK, but nothing more.

So much brilliant city, so little to do. And pretty tedious. Short and too easy.

    5/10

The game was, initially, developed for the PlayStation 2. After a while in development, Reflections or Atari decided they wanted a bit more money (although they'd probably say that the wanted to please a wider audience :p), and began development for the Xbox and GameCube versions. The GC version was scrapped, since the discs were too small (capacity, naturally), and the other two continued with development.
The Xbox version, since it has been in development for a shorter amount of time, would have to have all of the memory arrays and the processor usage reassigned which, if not altered, could result in laggy play.
But I think that they both could have done with some extra time - if it had only been the PS2 version in development, and released on the same date, I think that it would have been better, since they wouldn't have to concentrate on the two titles.
But I must admit, I'm not really that bothered - it lags just as much, if not less than Driver 2 (which I loved), but looks and plays better.

    What Reflections have done
    Driver 2 + Poor mans Hitman = Driv3r

    what Reflections should have done
    Driver 2 + Stuntman x Driver = Driv3r

Where do you get this from
  10. insert_name New Member

I got that from what happened.
