Christmas is coming early with Virtua Tennis & Splinter Cell being released a day ahead of schedule. But more exciting is the news that Red Faction and Rayman 3 are also to be released this week, eight days ahead of schedule! Things are really hotting up for the Christmas Period.

I'd just like to point out that this is a console chat forum, not a PR posting site. Plus I expect MYStiC G's going to edit your post again like he did with the last two.
  3. Barn New Member

Depressed you need to smile once in awhile, gaming is fun I suggest you give it a go.
  4. Dionysos New Member

Funny you say gaming is fun yet you seem to promote the worst gaming device ever concieved since the virtual boy.
  5. Depressed New Member

I'm actually a gaming nutcase. It's just you're posting completely useless and irrelevant pieces of information on a site that wasn't designed for them and will be edited out eventually. Plus, like Dionysos said, N-Gage really, really sucks.
  6. Barn New Member

Surprisingly enough I can tell that Dionysos and you (Depressed) are gaming nuts. You are arguing the same thing that gamers have been doing for decades pong is better than space invaders, my Commodore kicks your spectrum arse, Xbox rather than Sony, etc.

But you are missing the interesting point about the N-Gage. It is not being bought by traditional gamers. It’s being bought be the mass market, who are used to playing Snake, so the N-Gage games are a great improvement.

These ‘new gamers’ do read this site, and they see you both arguing whether red is better than blue. And what do they do, they pass right by, because they are not interested in fighting all they want to do is have some fun and see what is out there.
  7. Depressed New Member

I wasn't disputing the fact that people buy the N-Gage. I don't like it, and neither do a lot of people. But I'd just like to point out (YET AGAIN BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT GETTING THE GOD DAMN HINT) that this a gaming forum, not a site for advertisements. THEY ARE CLASSED AS SPAM. SPAM IS NOT ALLOWED.

HAVE YOU NOT NOTICED THAT THE MAJORITY OF YOUR FIRST ADVERTISEMENT IN THE JAVA GAMES THREAD WAS EDITED OUT? BECAUSE IT IS SPAM! STOP POSTING SPAM ON THEIS SITE!
  8. Barn New Member

The topic is about N-Gage and the Christmas period. The aim of this thread is to encourage discussion about this. This N-Gage forum would not be much of a dialogue if all the views where one sided. You have chosen to be against the N-Gage and I have chosen to defend it. Let us take our roles and begin.

    (EXASPERATED SCREAM)

All I am saying is stop posting advertisements. I have nothing against your opinions. Advertisements are classed as spam. An advertisement is not a discussion.
  10. Barn New Member

What advertisement, that you are promoting Marilyn Manson?

Anyhow lets get back to the topic, Christmas, N-Gage and Mass market. Will the N-Gage unite the hardcore gamers with the mass market? Can Nokia develop the N-Gage market in time for Christmas?
  11. Marlis Guest

He means the posts you keep making about updates, java games, and this one. I suspect he's got those marilyn manson quotes in his signature because he finds them amusing, like I do. He's not promoting them.
  12. Barn New Member

The Marilyn Manson quotes are amusing true, but by showing them to you (Marlis) and me, he is in fact directly / indirectly promoting them. As for this thread we seem to missing point which is to discuss the N-Gage and the Christmas Period.

What do people think will happen?
  13. Dionysos New Member

Sorry. Maybe I'm insane or something, but I'm sure that gaming already IS part of the mass market. Long gone are the days when anybody playing games was considered a nerd or shut in. The game industry today is equal to the music and film industry. It's a fact, the numbers are out there if you care to research them a bit. I cant be bothered atm :p

N-Gage will be a no hoper this Christmas, the game line-up is laughable and it just isn't worth buying over a GBA or Top line phone. consumers on a whole are typically stupid, so it will sell a very small amount I imagine. I feel sorry for anyone that gets one of these in their stocking.

The simple fact is that the N-Gage is a poorly designed and executed device. As a phone its sub-par and as a games handheld its a joke. If Nokia had any idea what the hell they were doing they would have at least incororated the features of a competitively priced phone. The fact that the N-Gage is poor at best isn't the only reason why it will die. The look of the phone/handheld/doorstop is abysmal. It's all about astehticsin the fone industry and the n-gage is up there with holding and old clarks shoe to your head. Never thought anything would beat the CD32 for sheer uglyness, but the N-Gage has. Its a burrito without any filling, simple as that.

As for arguing what current machine is best. I dont have to argue as I own all three. Whenever there has been any kind of console /computer war I have always owned all the machines. From C64/Amstrad/Spectrum to Amiga/Atari St to Megadrive/Supernintendo/Neo geo. I just offer my opinions on what aspects of each machine outperforms the other in my experience gaming on them. Pc rules all jooo console noobs anyways :p

The Mine is better than yours thing peeked with the megadrive Vs snes time, but I realised way before that, that the argument is pointless and just leads to idiotic name calling or fisticuffs lol.

    oh and btw

Advertisements are spam. The only advertisements that should be allowed are the forums/sites own popups, banners etc.

Dionysos, I know that we the 'hardcore gamers' have been fed the line that the games industry is equal to film industry, for a number of years now. But unfortunately it's a half truth.

Games sales to movie release ticket sales are roughly equal number. We as gamers have been quite proud to tell people this for years. Now step back and read between the lines of that quote. Movies do not just make money from tickets sales. They also make money from Video and DVD sales, followed by satellite and cable rights and then terrestrial TV. Then there is the franchise and licensing rights for the images the mugs, posters, dolls, sound tracks, computer games, etc. Then there are other revenues such as advertising endorsements. The long and the short of it movies make far more money than games.

Also look at the number of people who play games. Take the PS2 sold about 50 million units world wide at the beginning of this year, pretty good. Until you look at the number of mobile phones just sold in the United Kingdom, 50 million by itself. Now do you see the mass market? Lets face it half the planet is female and very few of them play games. So there are a lot more gamers out there.

Now that said lets look at the causal gamers, they are mass market and they are not going to know any better. As I’ve said before they are all used to playing snake, so the N-Gage games are an improvement. Read my posts, I’ve never said that the N-Gage games are the best things I’ve every played. But stuck on the train I’ve got my phone, it kills time and it’s fun.

As for the design I agree Nokia have a long/huge way to go. But that’s what Nokia do. They release something and six month later a new improved version is out, hence the 2004 E3 range.

So this is why I’m interested in the N-Gage.

Firstly The price of your average cinema ticket is around £4-£6. the price of your average game is £30 to £45. Now surely if what you say about Ticket sales and games sales are roughly even, then the games sales are going to produce more cash than the ticket sales. Also the fact that films go to dvd etc can also be countered by the fact that games go budget alot quicker than they used too and get a huge boost to sales because of the lowered price, which is still more than your average dvd, vhs.

As for merchandising, games have had this for years now, mainly since the advent of Metal Gear Solid and action figures were released, and believe me, although these things sell well, the only merchandising that does sell mass amounts is for such films as Finding Nemo , or Jurasic park. Huge names but names that only come around once a year. Same with gaming.

but I really dont want to get into figures etc etc

As for your point about comparing the sales of Ps2 to Mobile Phones. That's like comparing the sales of potatoes against chocolate. People who want to buy a console will buy a console. people who want to buy a mobile phone will buy a mobile phone. I cant imagine anyone sat with there fone in there hand and staring at their ps2 and dreaming that they could combine the two. Their is no mass market there, and believe me that will show out in the sales of the n-gage in its first year. As for saying that very few girls play games, thats a bit of a stereotypical statement isnt it? You would be surprised how many girls play games these days. like I said before gaming has passed the years of nerds and shut ins. Thanks to Sony and the Playstation.

Lets take a look at the "stupid gamers" as you called them ( i said consumers ). Yes there will be a certain amount of sales from parents being talked into buying an N-Gage for litlle timmy by the hyperactive Dixons sales boy, and there will also be the typical stupid consumer that swallows the hype of N-Gage ( if there is any ) but thats not enough to sell a machine/fone/brick. Sony created the whole cool identity of the Ps1 by bombarding us with adverts and staged events. Sponsoring concerts and using their record label to get big name music acts to be seen to play Ps1, this carried over to the Ps2. Microsoft played the US market like they always do , with the x-box thought to be the best thing since sliced cheese, and the consumer fell for it all. The Gamecube had a pretty poor advertising campaign and suffered for it with flagging sales. So how do you combat that? Drop the price so its the cheapest of all 3 and release previously embedded brand name Mario for a small price next to it. Along with a host of other titles.

Nokia have a rectangular screen, a voice says Blah Blah coming to N-Gage, quick flash of the logo. Blank screen. No mention of its telecomunication abilities. Just..

    "This game on this"

Poor. Very poor, and a sign of what I said all along Nokia havent got a clue. It's being marketted as a competitor for the GBA. The advert proves that. It will die if it does that. Nokia will need to change their ideas about how to market it or it wont last 6 months.

Reading back on this post it seems a bit hostile, I assure you it's not meant that way. Just having a discussion :D

Sales means cash raised from units sold. Volume means the actual number of units sold. So as you pointed out cinema tickets are cheaper, but far more are sold, hence why games and cinema sales are equal.

As for merchandising Metal Gear Solid made less than one-thousandth than the Matrix. It’s peanuts in comparison.

Right main point of the discussion, potatoes against chocolate, am I being fair? What things are the majority of people getting this Christmas? The answer is they are upgrading their phones. What to, well the sales figures are looking good for the N-Gage. Why keep on playing Snake when you can play Splinter Cell? The phone has what is known as AVA, (Added Value Advantage).

The conversation goes like this in the store.

    Customer: “I’d like a free upgrade/phone”.
Assistant: “Well you can choose any of theses”.
Customer: “What the different, between these phones”.
Assistant: “This one does this, that does that, oh and this ones a games machine, MP3 player and radio as well for free”.

So is it a real surprise that people are choosing the N-Gage?

    Customer: "But it's huge!"
Assistant: "Yeah, erm, but it has polyphonic ringtones."
Customer: "So does my old fone, and it's 5 times smaller"
Assistant: "Ah, but does your old phone play games like Tony Hawks!
Customer: "Look I want a phone not a gameboy"
Assistant: "No. it's better than a gameboy, because its a phone mp3 player and radio."
Customer: "I suppose, ok how much are the games?"
    Assistant: "Oh around £30"
    Customer: "WHAAAT!!!!"
Assistant: "But, but, they are much better than snake!"
Customer: "No sorry, I will have that phone over there, it looks nice."

If all your average consumer is used to playing snake, then he/she will not like paying £30 a pop instead of a couple of quid.

As for people choosing N-Gage , we will see in a years time if the machine is still going , ahem, "Strong"

As for merchandise, like I said , films like Matrix, come once in a blue moon.
Also I dont think the majority of Christmas presents this year will be moblie phones. Theres more to life than telecommunication devices after all. The majority of presents are toys/clothing/consumables.
